Course Description: High school science teachers are expected to be leaders in laboratory safety and chemical stewardship within their schools. In addition to teaching chemical principles, science educators are often responsible for managing laboratory chemicals, ensuring safe work practices, and overseeing the proper disposal of hazardous materials. CHEM 580 is a one-credit pass or fail course focusing on the laws, regulations, and best practices that apply to laboratory safety in educational settings. Through discussions of the OSHA Laboratory Standard, Chemical Hygiene Plans, hazardous waste management, and other applicable regulations, participants will develop the knowledge needed to maintain safe learning environments and responsibly manage laboratory chemicals throughout their professional careers. By the end of this course, participants will have developed a chemical inventory and a Chemical Hygiene Plan tailored to their institution, providing the foundation for a safer and more compliant laboratory program.
