Motivational Interviewing

Description: 
Review the concepts of motivational interviewing. Understand and apply motivational interviewing skills in the context of dental hygiene care. Practice motivational interviewing in a face to face setting and be provided feedback. Participants should be prepared to role play and record simulated patient interactions. This is not a certification course. 

Objectives:
     1. Understand the historical context of behavior change.
     2. Understand the development of motivational interviewing. 
     3. Identify the differences between motivational interviewing and other behavior change theories.
     4. Identify the intention and “spirit” of motivational interviewing. 
     5. Identify the four foundational skills of motivational interviewing. 
     6. Understand the use of motivational interviewing in behavior modification. 
     7. Identify ambivalence in a variety of clinical situations.
     8. Utilize motivational interviewing in a standardized patient simulation.
