Course Description: This is a two-day summer workshop held annually by the QuarkNet Center at the University of South Dakota (USD), free to high school teachers involved in STEM education. Professors from the department of chemistry, math, physics, USD, as well as professionals from the state- and nation-wide STEM organizations (such as QuarkNet.org) will provide STEM curriculum modules developed from on-going research activities, which will expose students to contemporary science concepts. Participants will also learn the best practice in delivering STEM contents to ensure the effectiveness of teaching.
In addition, participants will have the opportunity to tour in research labs at the departments of chemistry and physics, as well as state-wide research facilities, such as the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), Lead, SD. They will also learn resources and supports that they can obtain from QuarkNet and USD to facilitate their daily teaching activities.
The workshop is financially supported by QuarkNet.org, NSF E-Core, E-RISE, Dean’s office of the College of Arts and Sciences, USD, and Professor Liu’s NSF grants. Each participant will receive a daily stipend of $120 and free work lunch. One graduate credit can be offered for free for participants who need it.
