Description: This course is designed to certify the participants in nitrous oxide administration. This course aligns with the training requirements of the South Dakota Board of Dentistry. The program includes self-study via textbook, instructor-led didactic lectures and hands-on clinical training.
Objectives:
1. Understand the historical perspectives of N2O/O2 sedation.
2. Recognize N2O/O2 sedation as a safe and effective method for pain and anxiety management.
3. Identify the physiologic mechanism of pain.
4. Recognize methods for assessing and measuring fear and anxiety.
5. Identify the desirable characteristics of N2O/O2 sedation.
6. Recognize the physical and chemical properties of nitrous oxide and oxygen.
7. Recognize the pharmacokinetic properties of nitrous oxide.
8. Describe the manufacturing process of nitrous oxide.
9. Identify the parts associated with the delivery systems and understand their purpose.
10. Review principles of respiratory anatomy and physiology.
11. Discuss the clinical significane of diffusion hypoxia with N2O/O2 sedation.
12. Identify how nitrous oxide interacts with the body's systems and medication.
13. Describe the procedure for patient assessment prior to N2O/O2 sedation.
14. Recognize signs and symptoms of ideal sedation using nitrous oxide and oxygen.
15. Recognize signs and symptoms of oversedation using nitrous oxide and oxygen.
16. Describe and demonstrate the appropriate administration technique for N2O/O2 sedation.
17. Determine the appropriate recovery status of a patient following N2O/O2 sedation.
18. Demonstrate the appropriate technique for assessing recovery.
19. Identify prudent record keeping measures.
20. Identify principles of N2O/O2 use in pediatric patients.
21. Identify the biohazard issues regarding chronic exposure to nitrous oxide.
22. Identify specific health concerns regarding occupational exposure to nitrous oxide.
23. Discuss legislative and regulation issues regarding nitrous oxide abuse.
24. Recognize appropriate ethical and legal principles that apply to the use of N2O/O2 sedation.
25. Identify future trends for the use of N2O/O2 sedation.

Clinical Experiences with N2O/O2 Sedation
Groups will consist of 2-4 participants. For each administrative experience, the operator will follow the steps listed on the process evaluation form and complete a sedation record. When not actively performing the administration technique, other group members will be monitoring the patient for signs and symptoms of sedation. At least two administration/monitoring experiences are required to complete the clinical session.
Lunch and debriefing
Course wrap-up will occur when clinic finishes. Please turn in the exam, complete the course evaluation, and obtain the certificate of course completion prior to leaving.

Lectures and Webinars:
A full refund will be given if you cancel at least one week (five working days) before the program. If you cancel less than one week prior to the program, a $50 processing fee will be deducted from your refund.
Participation/Certification Programs:
A full refund will be issued if you cancel at least one month (30 total days) before the first program session. If you cancel less than 30 days prior to the program, a late-cancellation fee of $100 will be deducted from your refund.
Home Study/On-Demand Courses:
There are no refunds for home study or online courses once you have registered. Please review the course details before making the non-refundable registration payment.
*Please note, course may be cancelled due to inadequate amount of registrants. A full refund will be given if the Department of Dental Hygiene cancels a course for any reason.
